Power - Jennings Home

Built 1898
18 South Delaware Street, Butler, Missouri

Power-Jenn_HouseThis home was built by brothers, E.R. and M.R. Power shortly after their father died.  It was built on the same lot where the family had lived, only in a small cottage.  The father, Melvin Power, had come to Butler in 1866 opening a saw mill on South Main Street.  He shipped logs from Arkansas and soon added burrs for grinding corn, drawing customers from 50 miles away.  He added burrs for wheat and then boilers becoming the first steam powered mill in the county.  By 1877 father and sons employed 35 men, furnished 17 stores and 3 bakeries with flour and sold lumber to area farmers.  Every 10 hours the mill ground 120 bushel of wheat, 400 bushel of corn and 6,000 feet of lumber.  The boys never married.Power-Jen_Old

Th e home was later sold to Mr.  & Mrs. A.C. Jennings who had moved to town to open Jennings Market.
