Built 1881 213 South Mechanic Street, Butler, Missouri
John Catterlin came from Ohio to Pleasant Gap, Bates County after the Civil War and engaged in farming. He moved to Butler to open a farm loan business and built this home for his family. Constructed of white pine, it cost $11,000 to build. Originally it had tall towers at each end of the house. One burned and the other was removed to make the house balanced again. The home was later owned by Sam Barr who had the Powers Mills. John’s wife, Lucy Atkinson was from Pleasant Gap where her father had the Ohio House & Inn. He also served as sheriff during the War and for 2 more terms.
